Top 5 Best Greek Islands to Explore

Greece has always been an ideal Mediterranean vacation destination. With over 1,400 islands (230 inhabited), it can be hard to choose which one to visit first. Hopefully, these five will point you in the right direction.

Zakynthos – This immaculate island is in the Ionian Sea and is the third largest of the Ionian islands. Its nickname is “the flower of the Levant” and the beaches are stunning! They have a National Marine Park that is reserved for sea turtles and some historic locations as well. St. Dionysios houses relics of the Saint that many people visit each year. Bokhali is the epitome of beauty and a great tourist spot to visit. There you can see castles, old houses and cafes as well as amazing views of the harbor.

Mykonos – Part of the Cyclades, Mykonos is roughly 33 square miles. Its nickname is “the island of the winds”. They have a vivacious nightlife that is known to cater largely to the LGBT community. Recognized for its architecture and ever-popular rounded blue rooftops, Mykonos is one of the most visited locations in the Aegan. Their most popular months being July and August.

Crete – Crete is Greece’s largest island and contributes vastly to their heritage and economy. Some of the top places to visit include Agios Nikolaos, Hania and Elafonisi. All are hilly and have great dining and vibrant nightlife. There is also the Iraklio museum that is an historic Bauhaus building containing two stories of rich history.

Naxos – Naxos is the largest of the Cyclades and sports beautiful cobblestone streets and high illustrious mountains. This destination also has many beautiful beaches, some you can visit and others you cannot. They are known for their great food and reasonable prices. Moutsouna is a quaint port that is a perfect place to check out during your travel, there is a lot to see on your way as well.

Folegandros – This island has a dark past, however, its remote location and vast mountains make for a quiet and secluded getaway. There aren’t many touristy amenities or packages that you will find, but the Onar Suites and Vrahos are some good picks. The restaurants and wine are some of the best. Kritikos, Eva’s Garden, Patitiri and Baraki are easily in the top five.
